The word engineer comes from the Greek ekmetellis meaning “the person who attends astronomy.” Engineers are people who apply science and technology to solve problems, manufacture products, manage resources, and make new things happen.

Although engineers mostly work on mechanical, civil, and engineering projects, those particular careers often fall into the line of technology. Technology is the application of science and math to actual things and situations that can be examined, tested, and graded according to how well they conform to standard guidelines. During the 1950s, the engineer Don Welsh developed a series of mechanical devices that could be applied to manufacturing and construction industries. One of his most famous innovations was the hydraulic press. This enabled builders to pour materials with extreme precision into machines like a press. Although the technology was not particularly new, the hydraulic press was essentially the culmination of 10 years of engineer and inventor experiments.

In the 1930s, the general assembly line of production took shape through the invention of what was known as the control screw assembly. Although the machine was not particularly fancy, it was capable of producing parts for cars, boats, and other gizmos that were designed for construction purposes.

In the 1940s, the aerospace industry really started to take shape. This came about because the U.S. government investigators discovered that small engines could be assembled and disassembled within the space of a few hours. After these discoveries, the automobile and airplane industries were built around the assembly line.

In the 1950s, jet aircraft were discovered by two German scientists. Gottfried technically employed these aircraft in a research project that he completed in 1942. After this, the Germans continued to perfect these aircraft engines and built several hundred of them.

Aero planes are engines that use air intake and mid-mounted turbines to generate thrust. The most common type of jet aircraft is the Citation, a twin engine carrier-based aircraft.

Concorde is a supersonic transport aircraft that was capable of transcontinental flight. The Concorde was very popular among celebrities, particularly movie stars. The Concorde was often used by the film actors, particularly in Paris, and at the time of its retirement in 2003, it was the only supersonic jet aircraft still in operation.


Aerospace includes any field of flight associated with the human flight dynamics and control of flight. It encompasses the study of air, space, and atmosphere, and the application of techniques for flight control and structural operation.
